I thought the free pile at the end of my neighbor's driveway in Joliet was just junk, then I spotted a cast iron pan
Last Saturday I almost drove past it, but my kid yelled that there was a pan, so I pulled over. It was a 10 inch Wagner with rust all over it, and I figured it was trash, but I took it home and scrubbed it for 20 minutes with steel wool and oil. Now it cooks eggs better than the nonstick I paid $30 for at Target, and I feel silly for all the times I ignored those free piles. Does anyone here have a trick for spotting which rusty stuff is worth grabbing?
Did you know you can test cast iron with a magnet before you even pick it up? Rust does not stick to iron the same way it does to cheap metal, so if a magnet grabs it hard through the crud, it is usually the real deal and worth hauling home. That trick has saved me from dragging home plenty of cracked junk, and it takes about two seconds.
