That neighbor's advice about leaving lamps on kept my porch light situation messy for months

My neighbor in Tacoma told me to always leave a lamp on timers so it looks like someone's home, but I followed it for 8 weeks and my electricity bill jumped $14 with zero difference in break-ins. Anyone else find that the whole 'lights on' thing is a myth or did I just do it wrong?
