My VCR ate my favorite tape right before the big game

Back in 1994 I recorded the Bulls vs Knicks playoff game on a blank TDK tape, but when I hit play the next morning the machine just made this awful grinding noise and spit out a tangled mess. I was at my apartment on Maple Street in Chicago, panicking because my buddy was coming over to watch it later. I ended up taking the VCR apart with a screwdriver and carefully untwisted the tape by hand, but it left a crease that ruined the picture every few seconds. Has anyone else ever salvaged a tape after a VCR malfunction, or did you just accept the loss?
