The moment I realized I was doing intake forms all wrong
I had a client in Fresno last month, she had fibromyalgia and anxiety. I kept pushing her to fill out the standard 3 page intake at the office. She kept stalling, grabbing her bag, looking at the door. Finally she said, "I can't sit here and relive all that, can we just talk?" That's when it hit me. I was making disabled people relive their worst days just to get help, and they were walking out or freezing up. So now I do a 10 minute phone call first, basic questions only, and save the heavy paperwork for after trust is built. Am I the only one who got stuck on the state-mandated forms and forgot the human part?
