DAE see people drowning their focus ring in lighter fluid instead of just taking the lens apart?
Had a guy bring in a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 last month that he'd soaked in lighter fluid twice trying to free up a stiff focus ring. The helicoid grease was gone and the fluid had washed grit deeper into the threads, so what should've been a $60 clean and regrease turned into a $200 rebuild. Lighter fluid is for cleaning shutter blades, not for flushing a whole helicoid, and I keep seeing this advice passed around in Facebook groups. If your focus ring is stiff, pull the lens, clean the old grease out with a proper solvent, and relube with something like a lithium or silicone grease meant for optics. Anyone else run into this, or am I the only one who keeps getting these in?
