I figured dielectric grease was just snake oil until my AE-1 started metering weird in the cold
Last winter I had a Canon AE-1 on the bench from a guy in Minneapolis who swore the meter jumped around whenever it got below freezing. I cleaned the battery contacts with alcohol like always and sent it back, and of course it came back two weeks later. Out of ideas, I dabbed a little dielectric grease on the contacts and the needle has been dead steady for 6 months now. I always lumped that stuff in with the magical mystery sprays, but it turns out the grease keeps moisture from creeping onto the contact face. What other cheap fixes have you all written off as nonsense until a comeback job proved you wrong?
