Pro tip: a retired Nikon tech told me to test shutter speeds at 1/125 not 1/1000 and it saved me a comeback
A retired Nikon tech named Ray stopped by my shop in Reno a few weeks back to drop off a beat up FM2 for a clean and lube. I was showing him my fancy tester and bragging about how I check the fast speeds first, and he just laughed and said the fast speeds lie to you. He told me the slow end, like 1/125 down to 1 second, is where the real wear shows up on old cloth shutters, and if those check out the top end almost always follows. I tried it on the next three bodies that came in, and sure enough the FM2 was capping bad at 1/60 even though 1/1000 looked fine on my bench. That one tip alone kept me from handing back a camera that would've bounced at the counter. Anyone else check the slow speeds first, or am I late to this party?
