My buddy in Boise said to always pack a separate tarp for under my tent, and after a muddy weekend in the Sawtooths, I'm a believer.
He told me it was about protecting the tent floor from abrasion and moisture, not just keeping it clean, and when I woke up dry after a night of steady rain while others had damp gear, I finally got it (and it only cost about $30 for a decent one).

Yeah, that's just smart camping, not a crutch.

Ever notice how the right cheap piece of gear (or tool, or whatever) can totally change the game? Like, I finally bought a decent kitchen knife sharpener after years of struggling, and it's the same idea. You don't realize how much you're working against yourself until you spend that little bit upfront.
