The tent pole that snapped during a thunderstorm in Cherokee National Forest
I was set up about 2 miles down a trail near Indian Lake last Saturday when the sky just opened up. Wind hit so hard my cheap pole buckled and the whole tarp side came down on my face. I ended up tying the broken section to a fallen log with my boot laces and jamming a trekking pole under the ridge line. It held for the night, barely. I kept thinking, why do we trust these thin aluminum sticks over something that actual bears walk on? Has anyone else had a pole fail mid-trip and rig up a fix that somehow worked better than the original?
