Heard a kid say 'measure twice, cut once' wrong, made me rethink my own shortcuts

I was at a hardware store in Tulsa last Saturday, waiting on a board cut. This teenager with his dad grabbed a 2x4, eyeballed it, and said 'cut twice, measure once' as a joke. Dad laughed, but I stood there thinking about how many times I've skipped a re-measure on a long run of baseboard or a stair stringer just to save 10 minutes. Then I had to come back later and redo a whole section of trim because I trusted my first number. Has anyone else caught themselves rushing the simple stuff and paying for it double?

My uncle ran a cabinet shop for 30 years and he had one rule: never cut the second piece until the first one fits perfect. Saved his butt more times than I can count, especially when walls turned out to be crooked or out of square. The 10 minutes you save rushing usually turns into an hour of fixing later.
