Question about old growth versus new growth pine for trim work

I was fixing up my own house, built in 1928, and had to patch some window trim. The old wood was so dense and tight-grained I could barely drive a nail without a pilot hole. I used a piece of modern pine from the lumberyard for the patch, and it's so much softer and lighter. The difference in just under a hundred years of tree farming is huge. Has anyone else found a good source for denser, older-style lumber for repair work?

My 1910 house trim feels like petrified wood compared to new stuff.

Old growth wood was way denser back then.

Ugh, I feel that, and @smith.ray is totally right about the density.
