Talking to a retired framer at the hardware store changed how I see old houses

He said 'Every cut you make is a repair for the next guy.' Was talking about a 1920s bungalow I'm fixing up. Made me slow down and think about the next hundred years. Anyone else get hit with that kind of long view on a job?

My grandpa was a machinist and he'd say the same thing about his tools. He kept a logbook with every adjustment he made to the lathe, notes for the guy after him. It makes you realize how much of our work is just a temporary handoff to the next person in line.

Notice it in software too, where every quick fix becomes some poor dev's future headache.

A lathe logbook like @campbell.stella's grandpa kept is just wild to me.
