I finally ditched the canned beans after my mom showed me her trick with a $1 bag
I grew up watching my mom soak a $1 bag of pinto beans overnight on the counter, and I always thought it was a hassle so I bought cans at like 99 cents each for years. Last month she walked me through it at her place in El Paso, just beans, water, and a quartered onion in a pot on low for about 2 hours, and the taste difference hit me hard, way creamier than anything from a can. Cost works out to maybe 15 cents a serving versus almost a buck, and I get 6 cups out of one bag. Now I do a big pot on Sunday and use them for burritos, soups, whatever. Anyone got a good way to flavor the pot liquid besides onion and a bay leaf?
