Can we talk about how my $3 pot of beans beats the canned stuff I grew up on
My grandma in Toledo could feed six people on a bag of dried pintos and a ham hock, and I forgot all that until my slow cooker died on me two weeks ago mid batch. I ended up doing them on the stove in a plain pot with onion, garlic, and a spoon of bacon grease, and they came out better than anything from a can. Soaking overnight is the one step I used to skip, and now I get it. What cheap dried staples did your family stretch that you had to relearn the hard way?
