Looked at a $28k house in Cairo, Illinois and finally got why people fix these places up
I drove through Cairo, Illinois last month on a work trip and stopped to look at a house listed for $28,000. It was built around 1890. The porch was caving in and half the windows were gone. But the wood trim inside was still there, all of it, and the staircase had this curve I have not seen in anything new. I always thought old house people were just romantics chasing a feeling. Standing in that front room, I got it. You are not buying a house, you are buying work somebody did 130 years ago that still holds up. What is the oldest place you have walked through that made you think twice?
