My rotary brush snapped mid-job and sprayed soot everywhere

Last Tuesday I was doing a routine sweep on a big old chimney in a 1920s house near the river. About halfway up the flue, the rotary brush head just SNAPPED off the cable. Before I could kill the motor, it flung a ton of creosote and soot all over the living room carpet. The homeowner was watching from the doorway and just said 'oh no' real quiet. Took me almost 3 hours to vacuum and wipe down everything, plus I had to go back to the truck for my backup manual brush kit. I checked the cable before I started and it looked fine, no fraying or rust. Has anyone else had a brush head fail like that out of nowhere? Should I be replacing these heads on a set schedule or is it just bad luck?
