Broken spindle encoder bricked my whole Tuesday in Nashville

The encoder on our Matsuura started throwing random position alarms around 9am, and by 10:30 it was dead. Turns out the little glass disc cracked from vibration, which I guess happens when the machine has 30,000 hours on it and nobody ever checked the mounts. I spent 4 hours tearing down the motor housing, found the part online for $480, but it was the only one in stock at a supplier in Ohio. Got it running by 8pm, but the whole day's production went down the drain. Anyone else had an encoder fail out of nowhere, or did I just get lucky with the worst possible timing?

Wait, did you check the motor mounts too, or just the encoder bracket? Cause if the whole housing is vibrating, that new disc is gonna crack again in six months.
