TIL that the US has 21 million veterans but only about 6 million use VA health care, and the reason why surprised me
I was reading a report from the Rand Corporation last week about veteran benefits and came across that 21 million versus 6 million number. I always assumed most vets used the VA, but it turns out a lot of them have jobs with private insurance or live too far from a VA facility. What really got me was that the report said the biggest reason vets skip the VA is not distance, it is that they do not think they qualify for care. I called my uncle who did two tours in Iraq and he said he never even tried because he figured his income was too high. Has anyone here actually gone through the VA process and can tell me if it is really as confusing as it sounds?
