Early reader comic advice from a shop owner in Portland, turned out backwards

A guy at a comic shop told me to start with Secret Wars 2015 to get into Marvel, but it made zero sense with all the tie-ins and I quit after issue 3. Six months later a friend handed me the original 1984 Secret Wars and that clicked instantly. Anyone else get bad jumping-on point advice that drove you away instead of pulling you in?
