I think the shift in comic con crowds since 2019 is mostly a good thing, and I'm tired of pretending it's not
I went to the same local con in Columbus three years running, 2019, 2022, and last month, and the difference in who shows up is huge. In 2019 it felt like 90 percent dudes in their 30s and 40s digging through long boxes, and last month it was maybe half that, with a ton of teenagers and families walking the floor. I know a lot of older fans say the movies ruined cons by bringing in people who never read a book, but in my experience those new folks buy more than the old regulars ever did. The artist alley at my show went from 12 tables to over 40, and half those creators told me they only started making comics because they got into the characters through movies or shows first. So the gatekeeping bugs me, because the thing that got you in is not more pure than the thing that got them in. Your mileage may vary depending on your local scene, I'm sure bigger shows like San Diego feel different. What's the con scene like where you all are, have the crowds changed the same way or is it still the same regulars?
