Showerthought: comic shop pull lists went from 40 titles to 6 in my house and I blame the spec crowd
Two years ago my pull list at the shop in Sacramento was 40 books a month and I was grabbing every first issue that smelled like a movie deal. Then the spec guys showed up, variant covers started selling out in minutes, and suddenly every relaunch was a number one with a foil cover and a $9.99 tag. I cut back to 6 titles last March, just stuff I truly reread, and my shop owner said half his regulars did the same thing in the past year. The books didn't get worse, the buying part just turned into a casino and I got tired of it. Is anyone else down to a tiny pull list now, or is it just me and the guys at my shop?
40 titles to 6 is a huge drop but I gotta push back here, the spec crowd didn't kill your pull list, the shops and publishers did. Every relaunch with a foil cover and a $9.99 tag is a choice Marvel and DC made because they know the spec guys will buy 5 copies each, so regular readers get squeezed out while the stores chase the easy money. If stores actually capped variants or ordered more copies of the base book, you'd still be pulling 25 titles and the spec guys would just be a weird side thing you laugh at. Blaming the spec crowd is like blaming the rain when your roof has holes, they just found the leak. The casino was always there, you just finally noticed the odds.
