I finally talked to a salvage diver in Mobile who said 'the real risk isn't the depth, it's the paperwork', and it got me thinking.
He argued that meticulous logs and pre-dive plans prevent more accidents than any piece of gear, while I've always put my trust in checking my rig twice, so where do you stand on the safety debate, procedure or hardware?

Honestly, it's not really an either-or thing. Good procedure is what makes sure your hardware is actually checked right in the first place. A solid pre-dive plan is the system that catches the gear problem you might miss on a quick look.

Totally agree with this. I see it all the time with people rushing through checklists for anything, from packing for a trip to setting up a new phone. They skip steps thinking they'll just "catch" any issues later, but that's how small problems get missed. A good system isn't about being slow, it's about being smart so you don't have to fix bigger messes down the line. It's the difference between a quick glance and actually knowing everything is right.

Ugh, yes. That "quick glance" feeling always comes back to bite you.
