Ran a free Saturday meal thing at the park, and way more people showed up than I planned for
I set up a table at Miller Park in my neighborhood last Saturday with 40 sandwiches and a cooler of water, just to see if anyone needed a bite, and about 75 people came through in the first 90 minutes. I ran out fast and felt awful turning folks away, but a guy named Ray who grabbed a sandwich came back 45 minutes later with two cases of bottled water and a bag of oranges from his own kitchen. Has anyone run something like this before, and how do you guess the right amount of food without wasting it or running dry?
Stop planning the food count like it is some math problem you can solve. You had 40 sandwiches and 75 people showed up, but that is not a sign you messed up, it is a sign you guessed blind in the first place. Most of those 75 probably came because it was free and word travels fast at a park, not because they were starving. If you start stocking for 150 next time, you will be tossing half of it in the trash and Ray will be the only one eating your leftovers. Set a hard cap, hand out tickets at the start, or just run out and let it be fine, because turning people away is not the worst thing that can happen to a free meal.
