A chat with a new tech last Friday made me rethink how I document everything

I was walking a new guy through a printer setup at a client site in Tulsa and he asked why I bother writing down every little thing in my notes, like which USB port the scanner uses. I told him it saves time later, but he said something that stuck with me: 'You're not writing for future you, you're writing for the guy who has to fix this at 2 AM and never met you.' That hit different because I've been burned by bad notes before, spent 40 minutes tracing a cable that someone else had just labeled 'misc.' Now I'm going back through my old tickets and adding way more detail, specific model numbers, exact settings, even the weird quirks each machine has. Has anyone else ever had to decode someone else's vague notes and wished they had just written it out like a story?
