Swore off board level repairs on laptops for 3 years, then a Tuesday changed my mind
I used to tell every walk-in at my shop in Dayton that motherboard repair was a waste of time and they should just buy a new machine. Last Tuesday a guy brought in a ThinkPad X1 with a shorted capacitor and I quoted him $180 for the board swap I didn't want to do. He asked if I could just replace the one part and I laughed, but then I pulled the schematic and had the cap swapped in 40 minutes. The whole job took under an hour and he paid $95, which was more profit than the swap would have made me. So now I'm sitting on a $600 hot air station I bought Friday wondering why I fought this for so long. Any of you doing component level work, what's your go to source for schematics on newer Dells?
Honestly the "more profit than the swap would have made me" part is true for that job but it's not why the math works out. The real money is that you charged $95 and spent 40 minutes, so you can stack four of those in a day instead of one board swap that sits on your bench for a week waiting on a part. Also that $600 hot air station pays for itself way faster than people expect, one dead X1 or Latitude a week and you're even inside two months. For newer Dells, Dell's own support site is hit or miss but the schematics and boardviews usually float around on Badcaps and the laptop repair forums, just gotta dig. Watch the revision numbers though, a schematic for the 7420 won't match a 7420 board rev 3 and you'll chase a ghost.
