My buddy who runs a record store gave me one rule for rating albums and it fixed my whole system
I used to score everything out of 10 and my list was a mess, half the albums sat at a 7 and I could not tell you why any of them were there. My buddy Marcus, who has run a little record shop in Asheville for 19 years, looked at my list and said stop using 10 points, use 5 stars and only rate the album against itself, not against everything else you own. I brushed it off at first because it sounded like something a guy at a counter would say to sound deep. Then I tried it for a month with about 30 albums and the whole thing clicked. A 3 star record is just a 3 star record, not a knock on the band, and I stopped giving out 5s like candy because they actually mean something now. My scores dropped overall but I trust every single one of them, which never happened with the 10 point setup. Curious if anyone else got a rating tip from a person instead of a video, what was the rule and did it stick?
