Tried a writing prompt generator, rolled my eyes, then got hooked

I never use those prompt generator sites. Seemed like random word soup. Then a friend in my writers group dared me to try one during a dry spell. Used it for 20 minutes and got a specific setup about a lighthouse keeper finding a lockbox with his own death date on it. That one prompt gave me a full short story, 2,400 words. Now I keep a list of the weird ones, they work better than my own brainstorming. Anyone else found a generator that actually sparks something?

Stop pretending you're above it, we all know the junk drawer of prompts is where the real stories hide.

The junk drawer is where the magic happens, no doubt. I keep a running note on my phone of half-baked ideas, weird overheard phrases, and random images that don't fit anywhere yet. Most of it never goes anywhere, but every now and then I grab two pieces that don't belong together and bam, that's the story. The trick is not to judge the mess while you're collecting it. Just dump it all in there and let it sit. Your brain does the sorting behind the scenes.
