Don't trust the 'secure' WiFi at coffee shops, learned that in Austin last month
I was at a shop on South Congress using their open network to check my bank app, and a screen flashed with a fake login page asking me to re-enter my card details. I almost typed it in before noticing the URL was off by one letter, like 'coffee-shop-wifi.net' instead of the cafe's site. Turns out someone set up a rogue hotspot with the same name and it's super easy to do with a $30 device you can get online. Now I only use my phone's hotspot for anything financial, and I look at the padlock icon twice before typing passwords. Has anyone else run into a fake WiFi setup at a small business, and what do you do about it?
