Drove to the Hollis flea market for a $20 cast iron pan and got outsmarted by a guy named Dave
Last Saturday I hit the flea market in Hollis with $40 in my pocket, mostly hunting for a cast iron skillet since mine cracked in August. About 20 minutes in I spotted a beautiful 10 inch Wagner sitting on a blanket for $20, which is a steal and I knew it. The seller, an older guy named Dave, said it was his grandmother's and he'd take $15 if I bought the matching lid too, so I said deal. I handed him a $20 and he handed me back a $5, but in the car I realized the skillet had a hairline crack near the handle that I missed in the shade. I went back, showed him, and he without blinking swapped it for a nicer unmarked one he had under the table, said he'd rather I get a good pan than a bad story. So I walked away with a solid user skillet for the same $15 and a lesson about checking iron in direct sunlight. Has anyone else had a flea market seller just straight up do you a solid like that, and where are the good iron piles hiding this fall?
