Blew $1,800 on new windows last fall, and my furnace bill finally made me admit I was wrong
For two winters I swore the drafty windows in our 1950s house in Denver were no big deal, just caulk them and move on. My wife kept pushing for replacements and I finally caved last October, around $1,800 for six windows installed. First cold snap after that, our furnace ran way less and the upstairs bedroom stopped feeling like a freezer at night. I checked the Xcel bill from this January against last January and it was down about $60. That is not going to pay me back fast, but the house just feels different, no more plastic wrap on the frames. So now I am the guy telling neighbors not to wait as long as I did. Has anyone here done blown-in insulation after windows, and was it worth it or did you stop there?
What did your attic look like when you checked it, like could you see the joists or was it already buried? My place is a 62 build and the attic had maybe 4 inches of old stuff, so blowing in another foot made a bigger dent than the windows did. If yours is thin up there, that is where the real money is.
