Can we talk about how nobody actually follows up after a Detroit business networking mixer
Went to a mixer at a spot on Woodward about six weeks ago, traded cards with maybe 15 people, and I heard back from exactly two. One was a guy selling life insurance, so that doesn't really count. The other was a woman who runs a print shop over near Ferndale and actually wanted to talk about a real project, and that one turned into work. So basically 1 out of 15 contacts turned into anything, and it was the one who followed up with a real reason to meet instead of a generic nice to meet you email. I feel like the whole point of these events is the follow up and almost nobody does it. What's your move after a mixer, do you email the next day or wait, and has anyone figured out a way to make these things actually pay off?
Two out of fifteen hearing back is already better than most people get. The part that gets me is the life insurance guy being the one who did follow up. That tracks so hard it hurts. Six weeks is nothing in networking time, but yeah, if there's no real reason behind the email, it dies. The print shop thing worked because she had a project in mind, not just a handshake and a card.
