Chatting with a mural painter at Pike Place made me rethink my whole workflow
I was waiting for coffee in Seattle last Saturday and got talking to this older guy finishing a mural on a wall near the fruit stalls. He said he sketches everything by hand first, then snaps a photo and paints over it on a tablet, which sounded backwards to me since I do all digital from the start. But he pointed out that my layers were hiding the actual mistakes, so I tried his method on a 12 inch portrait piece and it forced me to slow down way more than I expected. Has anyone else switched to a hybrid sketch first approach after watching someone work in person?
