That $130 phone screen repair kit turned my spare phone into a paperweight

Picked up one of those all-in-one repair kits with the heated suction cup and clamps off Amazon last month. Watched three videos, felt confident. First attempt cracked the new screen mounting the frame. Bought a second screen for $55, got it seated but then the fingerprint sensor stopped working. Now I have a shattered old LCD and a new OLED that won't let me unlock the phone. Zero phones fixed, $185 down the drain. The kit promised beginner friendly, but honestly the adhesive alone was a nightmare. Anyone actually had success with those kits on a tight budget, or am I better off just paying a shop next time?
