Bought a $120 workbench vise online, hinge pin snapped on day 3
The listing photos looked solid but the casting was hollow inside, packed with sawdust, and after tightening a 2x4 for maybe five minutes the whole jaw dropped onto my boot, so before you order that cheap branded vise, ask the seller for the actual weight in pounds and pull the pin out to check the metal thickness.

That sawdust packed inside the casting is a dead giveaway they're cutting corners. I read somewhere that a lot of these cheap vises are just sand-filled shells with a thin layer of metal over them. You're right about asking for the weight, that's the quickest way to tell if you're buying a real tool or a paperweight.
