I think pegboard is overrated for workbench organization

Last month I ripped out the pegboard above my bench in the garage. Had it up for about 3 years. Kept losing those little hook clips every time I grabbed a wrench. Spent more time hunting for hooks than actually working. Swapped it for a french cleat system made from scrap plywood. Cost me zero dollars since I had leftover 3/4 inch stuff. Now my clamps and hammers sit solid on ledges. No more jiggly hooks falling off at 2am. Anyone else ditch pegboard for something more permanent?

Took me an hour just to sort through those dumb hooks and clips.

Yeah, "dumb hooks and clips" really got my attention. @paule53 what kind of system were you dealing with, like one of those truck bed tie-downs or maybe a drop-in tool organizer? I've got a husky brand organizer myself, and the plastic clips are awful if you don't line them up just right before pressing down. Was it a similar thing where you had to pop each one out and sort by hand?
