The before and after on this garage ceiling I did 3 years ago versus the one I finished last week is night and day, mainly because I finally learned to stop overworking the mud when I was feathering it out.

I went back to look at that old job for a quote and I couldn't believe how many little ridges and bumps I left behind, and now after picking up a 12 inch knife and using the right setting time mud it comes out glass smooth first pass. Anybody else look back at their old work and cringe at what they used to let slide?

My first few drywall jobs I straight up left globs of mud everywhere and thought sanding would fix it lol. I remember one ceiling in my buddy's garage where I used the cheapest pre-mixed mud and a 6 inch knife, took me like 5 coats and it still looked wavy when you hit it with a flashlight. Then a old timer showed me how to use hot mud for the first coat and a 12 inch knife for the finish, and I felt like an idiot for not learning that sooner. Now when I look at photos of my old work I want to go back and redo it all for free honestly. It's crazy how much you improve just by paying attention to the little things like knife angle and mud consistency.

You ever look at your old work and just cringe? It gets better though.
