I thought those little flower food packets were just a gimmick

I mean, I never used them for my own home bouquets, idk. But after a client specifically asked me to include them with her order last month, I tried it on a test bunch of tulips and they lasted a full 5 days longer. Has anyone else actually seen a real difference with certain brands?

Totally believe it. My mom always uses them and her flowers look fresh for over a week. Makes me wonder what's actually in those little packets.

Haha the "makes me wonder what's actually in those little packets" part got me. I had a buddy who worked at a flower shop for like a summer and he told me they used to just mix up their own version in a big bucket. Said it was basically sugar, lemon juice, and a tiny splash of bleach. He claimed the flowers would last almost two weeks if you changed the water every few days and added a fresh pinch of sugar. One time he forgot to put the bleach in and the water got all cloudy and gross by day three. So yeah I think the little packets are just a convenient version of that old school hack.

I read somewhere it's mostly sugar and a bit of bleach. The sugar feeds the flowers while the bleach fights the bacteria in the water. It's a pretty simple mix for how well it works.
