TIL my local cabinet shop only uses CNC machines now.

It's a lot of the repeat work, cutting big batches of identical parts. Leaves the tricky one-off stuff for the benches.

I used to trust carbon dating for EVERYTHING, but now I double-check with pottery styles. Our site's history got a LOT more complex.

Oh man, I was just reading about that. There was this whole thing about how the Shroud might have been in a fire, and the soot and stuff added newer carbon that messed up the dating. It makes carbon dating seem really shaky for some objects. Pottery styles change, but the clay itself doesn't really get contaminated like that. So using both together is smart, it's like backing up your work. I totally get why you'd want that extra check now.

Noticing a shift towards faster, less careful boiler maintenance. Don't fall for it.

The 2023 maintenance report did mention that three times cost figure, but it was specifically for industrial settings. I mean, for regular office stuff, it's probably less, but still way more expensive than just keeping up with things. Putting it on the calendar is crucial, but idk, ignoring all rush jobs might let small problems turn into big ones. Maybe it's just me, but I try to leave some open slots each week for emergency fixes so my schedule doesn't get wrecked. That way, you're proactive but not rigid when something actually breaks.

After a near-miss last week, I'm done with adhesive seals on pressure joints

Switched to mechanical seals after a similar scare last year. They handle the heat cycles way better, even if the install takes longer. No more pucker factor during rapid temp drops lol.

Unpopular opinion: The quiet car isn't so quiet anymore.

Last Tuesday on the Metro-North, a loud phone call made me rethink the quiet car rules.
