Just learned the Commodore 64 had a built-in BASIC interpreter that took up only 9K of ROM

Blow their minds even more and tell them that DOS 1.0 from 1981 fit on a single 160KB floppy disk with room to spare. Meanwhile my phone's settings app is somehow 800MB and still forgets my WiFi password every other update. Really makes you appreciate how efficient things used to be before we started just throwing storage space at bad code.

Spent $80 on a fancy bokashi bin and got nothing but mold

Yeah I totally feel you on this. I had the same exact problem with my compost bin, the seal just didn't hold up after a few months. It started letting in air and moisture and before I knew it, everything was moldy and gross. It's frustrating because you pay extra for something that's supposed to be better quality, but it's still using the same cheap plastic parts. I've started to realize that a lot of these "premium" kitchen tools are just overpriced versions of the same basic stuff. Your mileage may vary obviously, but I've had better luck with simpler, sturdier designs that don't try to be fancy.

Just realized my $3 thrift store knife sharpener beats my expensive one

Did you see that test where a dollar store knife sharpener outperformed a Work Sharp?

I just found out most BIOS battery failures are actually just corrosion on the holder contacts, not the battery itself.

That HP Compaq was built like a tank but demanded strange sacrifices from those who dared revive it.

Overheard a guy at the REI in Boulder say something about switchbacks that totally changed how I plan routes

Oh man, that's actually a really good point. I always figured they just zigzagged to make the climb easier on your lungs, never thought about it being about the trail itself. But wait, so if some switchbacks are way steeper than others, does that mean the trail builders messed up or is there a reason for that too?
