inPicked fiber cement siding over vinyl for my 1950s bungalow
Three panels over one storm doesn't really prove much though. Vinyl is cheap and easy to patch, fiber cement is pricier and harder to replace if it does crack. My buddy's parent's place got hit by a tree branch and the fiber cement just shattered in a way you couldn't really fix smoothly. Plus vinyl absorbs impact better in some cases, I've seen it dent rather than break. Not saying either is perfect, but one bad hailstorm isn't a full test.

inPicked fiber cement siding over vinyl for my 1950s bungalow
My buddy in Garneau went fiber cement on his 1920s foursquare and swears it held up way better through that hailstorm we had back in 2021. His vinyl neighbor had to replace three whole panels.

inFound out my tap water pH was 8.5 and it explained why my houseplants kept dying
Yeah but nobody's talking about how the pH swing from 8.5 down to rainwater levels can actually shock the soil microbes if you switch too fast. I tried alternating tap and rain once and my plants got all droopy until they adjusted. Slow changeover is the real trick here.

inDiscovered the plastic bag trick for stubborn soot build-up on curved flues
The dish soap trick is solid gold, my grandpa used to do that with his old chimney stuff. Also learned the hard way that trying to force a dry brush through glazed creosote just makes a bigger mess on the floor. The bag method really shines on those offset flues where you can't get a straight shot at anything.

inTalked to an old landscaper at the dumpster and now I rethink my whole soil approach
@olivia_murphy I think that old guy in Japan is actually using a pretty specific method called bokashi composting, not just a straight hole in the ground. But your point still stands, nature doesn't need fancy tools to break things down.
