I thought the 'no campfires' rule on the Lost Coast Trail was overkill

Honestly, I still think a tiny, careful fire is okay in some spots. I get the driftwood thing, but on a cold night it can be a real morale boost. Some of my best trail memories are from sharing stories by a small fire. The blanket ban feels like they don't trust people to use common sense.

Showerthought: I used a zip tie to fix a stripped oil drain plug hole... and it held for a year.

Lmao that's amazing. It's wild how often the "good enough for now" fix just becomes the permanent solution. I see it all the time with stuff around the house, like a book propping up a wobbly table leg that never gets replaced. Makes you wonder how much of the world is held together by zip ties and hope.

I was buying the 2 pound bag of rice for years, then saw the 20 pound bag price per ounce at the market.

Check the price per pound, not ounce.

I used to plan my trips with a paper map and a highlighter, then I switched to CalTopo

Man, I was a total paper map holdout for the longest time. Thought all the apps were for people who couldn't read a real map. Then I got caught in a whiteout on a ridge and my soggy map was useless. Having a GPS map on my phone that showed my exact dot on the trail probably saved me a really bad night. The slope shading feature is the real hero though, lets me avoid sketchy terrain I might have missed on paper.

I was drawing a simple bracket for six hours before a coworker pointed out my mistake

Oh man, I feel that. Spent two years in Photoshop manually copying and pasting layers to make a grid. My wrist was killing me. Then I watched a random tutorial for something else and saw the guy use the align and distribute tools. My whole life was a lie. It's crazy how you can use a program every day and just miss a core feature. That moment when you learn it is equal parts amazing and embarrassing.
