My $300 investment in a proper ventilation fan was the best money I ever spent.

Tell me about it, I thought my brain was trying to escape through my eyeballs. You really have to admire the stubbornness of thinking "this time it'll be fine" while actively inhaling poison. My respirator now lives on the workbench as a permanent shame monument. That two day headache feels like your body sending a very angry, overdue bill.

My pork shoulder bark went from pale to perfect in just 2 hours

That water pan trick @betty_white39 mentioned saved my brisket last summer.

Vent: Had to pick between cedar and composite for a big job in Austin

Honestly, "wrong advice" seems a bit strong. It's Austin, wood moves. A few warped boards in six months is pretty normal, especially after a summer. A follow-up tighten and touch-up is just part of the cedar deal, not a failure.

I was at a small con in Omaha and saw a guy just give a kid his extra copy of a key issue for free.

That bit about haggling with kids hits home, @matthew864. I got stuck in that same spot at a flea market last year with a kid selling old video games. He wanted five bucks for a scratched up Mario Kart. I just paid the five and told him to keep the change. The smile was worth way more than the four dollars I could have saved. It feels better to just make the kid's day, especially when it's such a small amount to us. Now I just see it as a tiny investment in not feeling like a jerk later.

Overheard a guy at the store say he 'can't afford' to eat healthy

Get why he feels that way because the junk food aisle is always screaming about deals. I had a customer at the hardware store say the same thing while buying light bulbs. The real cost is time, not money. You have to plan a little. A big bag of rice, some dried beans, and whatever veggies are cheap that week makes a solid base for meals. It's boring sometimes, but it keeps you full and doesn't wreck your budget.
