I finally realized I was giving terrible gifts because I never paid attention

Oh man, that hits close to home. I once gave my sister a fancy gym bag because I was really into working out at the time. She looked at it like it was a dead fish. She hasn't set foot in a gym since high school. It's so easy to just project your own interests onto people. Now I keep a note in my phone when someone mentions something they want, even if it's small.

My worm bin hit 5 pounds of finished compost this month

Keeping a plant alive for a full year is a legit win in my book. Some of those things just decide to give up no matter what you do. I've had a fern that turned brown from me looking at it wrong. What's the big deal with acting like it's a real achievement? It's okay to be happy about the small stuff. What plant are you trying not to kill?

PSA: The junkyard in Dayton had a ton of clean 4.0L Jeeps last Tuesday

Testing compression on a yard motor is a real puzzle without a starter. Ever think about just pulling the spark plugs and looking inside with a borescope camera? They're cheap now. A bunch of clean oil on the valves might mean it's not locked up, at least.

Showerthought: That 'perfect' wall fish in Phoenix last week was a total fluke

That part about bosses forgetting the mess is so true. They see a finished wall and just want the wire run now, no matter what it costs later. The rules exist because someone already paid for that lesson in broken tiles and angry clients. Pushing speed over doing it right just passes the problem to the crew who has to face the homeowner. It's short term thinking that always bites you.

My mentor in Dallas told me to stop using a 10% glycolic acid peel on rosacea clients, but after 3 months of careful patch testing and short contact times, I've seen amazing results with zero flares.

Hot take: Rules are just strong suggestions. Longer response: Those hard rules are a starting point, not the finish line. They exist to keep people safe from the worst case scenario. But skin is way too personal for a one size fits all approach. The best tool you have is your own careful observation over time. If you do the work and track the results, you'll find your own exceptions to every rule.
