Running 35s on a stock Dana 30 axle is asking for trouble, not a budget build
I keep seeing guys in the Colorado groups slap 35 inch tires on their Jeeps with the factory Dana 30 and call it a day. That axle is just not built for that size tire, especially if you ever use 4WD off pavement. I snapped an axle shaft on my old TJ near Buena Vista the first time I got it in a bind, and that was on 33s. Has anyone actually run 35s on a stock D30 long term without breaking something?

Watched my buddy run 35s on a stock D30 in his JK for three years. He just wheeled smart, avoided the loud pedal when he was crossed up, and never broke. It's all about driving style and knowing your limits. Sure, it's the weak link, but calling it a guaranteed break is overkill. I've seen more guys blow up D44s because they got overconfident than guys who carefully wheel a built-up 30.

Yeah, that Buena Vista rock is no joke. So when you snapped that shaft on 33s, were you locked up front or was it just open diffs and bad luck? Trying to figure out if a locker makes the D30 with 35s a guaranteed grenade or if you can baby it.

Oh man, don't even get me started. Honestly, it was locked up front, which I'm sure helped find that one weak spot. Tbh, wright.taylor has a point about driving style, but a locker on 35s just feels like you're asking the D30 to hold your beer. You can baby it, sure, but that's a lot of stress on a small box of parts. Ngl, I'd call it a time bomb, not a guarantee, but you're definitely on borrowed time.
