Update: my $80 steering stabilizer on 35s was hiding a bent tie rod the whole time
Put 35s on my 2004 Tacoma back in March and the wheel shimmied bad over 55, so I dropped $80 on a beefier steering stabilizer instead of digging into the front end. Felt fine on the highway until I took it up to Hollister Hills and the death wobble came back hard at 40 mph on the fire roads. Turned out the stabilizer was just masking a bent tie rod from a rock hit, cost me $240 total for the new rod plus an alignment at a shop in San Jose. Anyone else run a stabilizer as a band aid and regret it?
A stabilizer is not a band aid if your tie rod is straight, tons of guys run one on 35s just to take the edge off road feel. The real lesson is you gotta crawl under there with a flashlight after every rock hit, $80 would've paid for a decent alignment check.
