Vent: My $400 winch mount was a total waste until last month

I put a heavy duty steel winch mount on my old Land Cruiser about two years ago, and for ages I thought it was just extra weight and money down the drain. Then last month, I got my truck high-centered on a slick rock face during a solo trip in the Mojave. That mount held solid and let me winch myself off without a hitch. So, was it a dumb buy that sat unused, or a critical piece of kit that finally earned its keep? How do you guys judge if a 'just in case' mod is worth it?
