Best shift of my career happened on a Friday the 13th, go figure
Last month I got assigned to a last minute AOG job in Tulsa. A regional carrier had a 737 with a flap issue and their usual guy was out sick. I drove 3 hours with my box in the truck bed, no backup plan.
Got there at 6pm. The write up said intermittent flap indicator, but of course it worked fine on the ground. I pulled the manual and started tracing. Found a chafed wire bundle behind the wheel well access panel, barely visible unless you knew where to look. The insulation was worn down to bare copper on three wires. Fixed it with proper splicing and new conduit, tested everything twice.
Here's the part that made it stand out: nobody hovered over me. No lead breathing down my neck, no customer rep asking for updates every 15 minutes. Just me, the plane, and a faded copy of the wiring diagram. Finished at 11:30pm, grabbed a gas station sandwich, and the plane left on time next morning.
Got a call from their maintenance director two days later saying they were putting me on their preferred contractor list. That's never happened to me before.
What's the best job you've had where everything just worked out? Not the smoothest one, but the one that felt right?
