Had a chat with a homeowner yesterday that changed how I approach panel placement

I was installing a new system in a 1950s house in Oak Park and the owner asked me why I always put the main panel in the basement coat closet. He showed me his old alarm panel was mounted in the kitchen pantry and said he never used the system because he hated walking down there to disarm it. Has anyone else had a client give feedback that made you rethink your standard install habits?

Right there with you. I once put a keypad right where a homeowner's new refrigerator was going to sit. They moved in, fridge got delivered, and suddenly the disarm code was a guessing game because you had to army crawl behind the appliance to see the lights. Had to come back out and rerun the wire to the other side of the kitchen. Felt like a rookie mistake for something so obvious in hindsight.

Man I once mounted a panel behind a door that swung inward and then had to admit to the customer that they'd need to squeeze in sideways to type in the code. Made me feel about two inches tall.
