Hot take: dried beans are way better than canned after trying both for chili

I made two batches of chili last Sunday, one with canned black beans and one with dried I soaked overnight, and the dried ones cost about 60 cents less per pound while the texture was firmer and not mushy. The dried beans also absorbed the spices way better so the whole pot tasted richer without adding extra seasonings. Anybody else notice a big difference switching to dried beans for cheap meals?

Finally got that old anvil face flat again after 3 hours of grinding

My 80 pound anvil from a farm auction had a crater in the face from some idiot using it as a punch plate, so I spent my Saturday with a 36 grit flap disc and a straightedge, and now it rings true for the first time since I got it has anyone else had to rescue an abused anvil like that?

Hot take: wet aged beef beats dry aged for most home cuts

Tried dry aging a ribeye roast for 28 days in my garage fridge. Lost nearly 25% to trimming. Wet aged a primal in cryovac for 3 weeks and kept everything. Who else thinks dry aging is overrated for the cost?

I was going through my old job books and counted up every deck I've built since I started out on my own back in 2006. The tally came to 504 decks as of last Thursday, and I honestly never thought I'd hit that number. How many builds have you guys done without really keeping track?

I went to a Detroit chamber of commerce mixer last month and it was just people handing out cards for 2 hours, no real conversations. Then a buddy dragged me to a small gathering at a coffee shop in Corktown put on by some local founders group. The difference was the format - no scheduled talks, just a prompt to ask about someone's biggest win that week. I ended up swapping services with a graphic designer after talking for 15 minutes. Has anyone else found that smaller casual meetups work way better than the big official events around here?

Pulled up a stat on my old dredge pump today that caught me off guard

Was going through the manual for my 2018 Ellicott 370 and noticed the rated flow is 2,500 gallons per minute at 75% efficiency. I always assumed it was lower based on how slow the material comes through sometimes. How do you guys check if your pump is actually hitting its specs on the job site?

Pro tip: Stop calling every little crack in the foundation a disaster

I swear, every time I walk through an open house with friends someone spots a hairline crack in the basement floor and starts talking about structural failure. Last month my neighbor sold his 1950s bungalow near Euclid Avenue and the buyer's inspector flagged a tiny vertical crack in the slab. My neighbor panicked, paid $2,800 for an engineer to look at it, and the guy basically said it's just normal settling from 70 years of Ohio clay soil expanding and contracting. I've seen the same thing on three homes I've helped flip: a crack less than 1/8 inch wide with no displacement is almost never a problem unless water is seeping through or it's actively growing. Meanwhile people ignore actual issues like a furnace from 1987 that's wheezing or gutters dumping water right next to the footer. Has anyone else had to talk a buyer down from demolition panic over a routine crack?

PSA: Those $50 solar filters on Amazon are a total scam

Yeah same thing happened to me with a $45 "Solar View" brand filter I grabbed off Amazon last year. I put it on my Nikon and took maybe three shots before I noticed this weird hotspot in the frame. Looked closer and there was a tiny crescent shaped tear right in the center of the film, probably from being folded in the shipping envelope. I was so mad I actually tested it by holding it up to a bright ceiling light and saw like six or seven little pinpricks of light coming through. Honestly I think these sellers just buy bulk mylar sheets meant for like emergency blankets and cut them up. I ended up shelling out for a Baader film filter from a real astronomy shop and it was night and day difference.
