Why I stopped putting keypads by the front door after a break-in call in Tulsa
Everyone in this trade swears the keypad has to be at the main entry door. I did it that way for 9 years. Then I got a service call in Tulsa back in March, family came home to a kicked-in door and a dead keypad hanging off the wall. Thief just ripped it off and cut the wire. Whole system was down before they even got inside.
Now I put the main keypad in the master bedroom or a hall closet, and only a secondary one by the door. I know half the guys here will say that's backwards, that customers want it where they walk in. But I've had 4 customers since then tell me they like it better because they arm the system from bed at night anyway.
The door keypad is what the bad guy sees and goes for first. The real one is 20 feet away behind a closed door. Cost me about $40 extra per job in wire and labor and I've eaten that myself.
Am I the only one doing this? Or does everybody still slap it right next to the deadbolt because that's how the book says to do it?
Man, this reminds me of a buddy who hid his spare car key in the gas cap instead of under the wheel well, crooks never think to check there. $40 out of your own pocket is a bummer though, you ever get a customer to cover that?
